We route VFX and CGI work to different cities for different reasons. Below is the working insider comparison from running cross-border post pipelines through Mumbai, Los Angeles, and London vendors over the past four years.

Mumbai.

Day rates: ₹40,000–80,000 for senior compositors; ₹25,000–50,000 for matchmove and rotoscope; ₹80,000–1.5L for senior CG / Houdini leads.

Turnaround: aggressive. Mumbai's VFX market is hungry, competitive, and willing to work the calendar a London vendor would refuse. A 6-week window in London often runs 3 weeks in Mumbai.

Software stack: Nuke is dominant for compositing. Houdini for FX. Maya for hero CG, with growing Blender adoption in younger studios. Substance Painter standard for texturing.

Strengths: aggressive pricing, strong matchmove and rotoscope houses, the largest pool of available compositing talent in the world.

Weaknesses: senior CG / Houdini supervision is thinner than it appears in headcount; the same five names anchor most major work. Cultural over-promising on timelines is a frequent issue — Mumbai vendors will often say "yes" when a more honest answer is "with these caveats."

Best for: matchmove, rotoscope, mid-tier composite work, character clean-up, and anything that benefits from volume + cost.

Los Angeles.

Day rates: USD 800–1,500 for senior compositors; USD 1,200–2,000 for senior CG; USD 1,500–3,000 for VFX supervisors.

Turnaround: slower than Mumbai, faster than London. LA shops are calendar-disciplined and explicit about scope.

Software stack: Nuke and Houdini dominant. Hero feature work uses Pixar's RenderMan and Side Effects' Mantra. Vertex shops still run on Maya, with growing migration to Houdini Solaris.

Strengths: the best senior creature work in the world. Heroic finishing for theatrical features. Specialist effects (water, fire, destruction) at a craft level Mumbai and London occasionally match but rarely beat.

Weaknesses: cost. LA is twice London for equivalent work and 5–6x Mumbai. Worth it for theatrical features; not worth it for commercial work below a $5M total budget.

Best for: theatrical feature finishing, hero creature work, anything that needs to win a VFX Oscar consideration.

London.

Day rates: GBP 600–1,200 for senior compositors; GBP 1,000–1,800 for senior CG; GBP 1,500–2,500 for VFX supervisors.

Turnaround: calendar-disciplined and slow. London books a 12-week window for what Mumbai will quote in 6 weeks. London actually delivers on the 12 weeks; Mumbai delivers on 7–8 with two crisis nights.

Strengths: the calmest, most professionally managed pipeline in the world. Best supervision craft, by a margin. The London shops are where you go when the client cannot tolerate any chance of a missed milestone.

Weaknesses: cost (1.5–2x Mumbai for equivalent work). Calendar (rarely compresses). Some craft volatility post-2023 as senior talent left the big shops; the second-tier shops have inherited brilliant supervisors who run smaller and faster.

Best for: high-profile feature finishing, premium brand campaign VFX, anything where the client will pay 2x for the bottom 1% probability of a missed milestone.

The 2026 routing pattern.

For commercial brand films and corporate work: Mumbai for compositing and matchmove, Mumbai or India-regional for environment CG. Cost is the driver.

For premium brand campaigns and OTT series: London for hero supervision, Mumbai for execution volume. Hybrid pipelines dominate.

For theatrical feature work: LA for hero creature and effects, London for finishing, Mumbai for volume rotoscope and matchmove.

The hidden variable.

Time zone matters more than cost. A Mumbai compositor working a London-based brief delivers overnight notes that arrive the next morning — that compresses calendar in a way LA cannot replicate. The studios that win the most cross-border post work in 2026 are not the cheapest in their city — they are the ones with the best overnight handoff discipline.

For your next project, pick the city by the time zone you need to compress against, then pick the vendor inside that city by the supervisor's name. The supervisor's craft is what determines the film. Everything else is logistics.
