Most industrial film briefs we receive include the line "drone aerials of the plant." About half the time this is straightforward. The other half, the shot is not legally permissible without two or three permissions that no one mentioned in the brief.
Here is the working summary of what is actually permissible for industrial drone cinematography in India in 2026.
The DGCA framework, briefly.
The DGCA's Digital Sky platform classifies airspace as red (no drones), yellow (drones with permission), and green (drones with notification only). Most industrial sites in India are in yellow or green. Sites near airports, military installations, refineries, or designated strategic infrastructure are in red. The single most common briefing surprise is discovering that a plant is in a red zone three days before the shoot.
The plant-level permission.
Even in green airspace, plant management has to permit drone operation over their site. Most plants will. Some will not, particularly defence contractors, pharmaceutical manufacturers with patented processes, or anyone with active litigation. Get written permission from the plant manager and confirm the no-fly periods (typically over personnel break areas, hazardous storage, and certain process zones).
The pilot certification.
The drone operator must hold a valid Remote Pilot Certificate from a DGCA-approved training organisation. Most freelance drone ops in India do; some do not. Ask for the certificate number before you contract. An uncertified operator is not just a regulatory risk — your insurance does not cover damage from an uncertified flight.
Insurance.
Industrial drone shoots need third-party liability insurance specific to the airframe and the operation. Most production insurance does not cover drone operations by default. Confirm at the budgeting stage, not at the shoot date.

Wide cathedral aerials of the plant from outside the perimeter fence: almost always fine. Slow tracking shots along the production line interior: with plant safety approval. Hero reveals starting at machinery level and pulling up through the roof: requires structural roof inspection. Aerials over hazardous storage zones: typically prohibited. Aerials over personnel during shift change: typically prohibited. Aerials over the chairman walking the plant: requires the chairman's personal sign-off (always get it; it is one of the best shots in industrial cinema).
What you cannot shoot.
The neighbour's plant. The road outside the plant if it is a state or national highway. The drone's own shadow on the lensed product. Anything within 5 km of an active airport without specific airport permission.
Equipment.
For commercial industrial work we default to the DJI Inspire 3 with Zenmuse X9 cameras for hero work, and the Mavic 3 Pro Cine for tighter spaces and faster turnaround. Both are DGCA-registered. The Mavic flies in tighter envelopes; the Inspire delivers cinema-grade output. Budget difference is small enough that the choice is creative, not commercial.
Weather and timing.
Wind above 12 m/s grounds the Inspire. Rain grounds both. The "golden hour" aerial that the brief asks for is 45 minutes between sunrise and sunset and weather-permitting. Plan for two golden-hour windows per shoot day, knowing one will likely be lost to clouds, wind, or schedule slippage.
What the regulation does not catch.
Even with all permits in order, your drone operator's craft is what determines whether the shot works. The number of operators in India who can hold a smooth ascent through a plant roof while tracking a moving piece of machinery is small. Pay for the experienced operator. The footage is the asset; the permit is just the pre-requisite.
Drone cinematography for industrial work is, broadly, easier than it sounds and harder than it looks. The permits are routine. The shots that earn the film are not.
